Uruguayan writer Mario Benedetti applauds after receiving the Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of the Republic (state) in Montevideo, on March 22, 2004. Benedetti died on May 17, 2009 at the age of 88 as a consequence of an intestinal disease. Born in 1920, Benedetti has written tales, poems, essays, theatre and novels and is one of Latin America’s best known writers. The Argentine film based on his novel “La Tregua” (The Truce) was nominated for an Oscar in 1974 for Best Foreign Language Film, while singers such as Spanish Joan Manuel Serrat and Uruguayan Daniel Viglietti have sung his poems.
